The Spotify bundle is up for grabs with Virgin Media

Fancy a musical broadband deal? Then your best bet is the new Virgin Media Spotify-based bundle, announced moments ago today. Existing Virgin Media’s broadband customers who are keen on getting a contract with the firm’s mobile division will also get a three month Spotify Premium subscription free (which equals to a saving of almost £30). The savings get higher for re-contracting customers or those who decide to get one of Virgin Media’s prized products, superfast fibre broadband, as subscribers will be able to get their hands on 6 months of free…

BT makes its fibre rollout deadline more ambitious

It seems that BT decided to fast forward its fibre rollout and make its deadline even more ambitious, from 2015 to 2014. As a quick reminder, the telecoms giant has invested a hefty £2.5bn in order to provide FTTP (fibre-to-the-premises) and FTTC (fibre-to-the-cabinet) based services to roughly 66 per cent of the nation. This means that an extra 520 telecoms engineers will be required to complete the grand rollout in time. At the moment, BT has already splashed out £1bn on its fibre venture. BT’s CEO, Ian Livingstone, was reported as saying: “We are…

Broadbandwatcher joins the spooktacular TiVo horror quiz event

Broadbandwatcher takes Halloween seriously, so does Virgin Media. That’s why we sorted our costumes quite quickly and joined the fun at Virgin Media’s TiVO Trick or Cheat Horror Quiz. Hosted by TV legends Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee, the event was packed with celebs including Henry Holland, Lydia Rose Bright, Donna Air, Kate Walsh, Katie Waissel and the Red Velvet Lovers, Darren Jeffries and Melvin Odoom amongst many others. The quiz itself was very entertaining with a bit of TiVO trivia thrown in, which proved to be useful as who knew…

20 per cent of UK adults never sent an email?

Scary stats come from BT, which has found that a fifth of UK adults have never had the pleasure of sending an email. Ever. The findings are based on a survey, which asked 2,103 Brits about their somewhat trivial web habits and how they generally socialised. The study is a part of the telecoms giant’s Get IT Together as well as Martha Lane Fox’s Give an Hour campaigns which seeks to get the tech savvy to donate an hour of their time and help those who are not very familiar with…

Newbie ISP LittleBigOne joins the Digital Region project

Keen broadband news followers might remember the Digital Region project, which aims to provide a substitute (to BT’s) superfast broadband network to residents of South Yorkshire, has started to list a fresh new ISP. Why LittleBigOne is of significance, you might ask. According to its website it’s on its way to become the pioneer of broadband bundles which will include IPTV (Internet-based television). It is anticipated that the firm will start to provide the broadband-based television service in December while the company’s official launch will take place this weekend, just before…

Child porn to be no more, says the European Parliament

Action will be taken to dispose of all the child sexual abuse content from the web as the European Parliament (EP) has given the green light to the European Commission’s (EC) proposal. According to the EC’s new Directive, ISPs should start liaising with web hosts as well as content providers to right the wrongs and remove online child pornography material. All of it. EU States will also need to engage in talks with “third countries” (also known as countries outside the Eurozone and those located on other continents) to remove inappropriate…

A third of our activities are done online, TalkTalk found

It seems that we complete a third (or 30 per cent) of our activities online – we shop, we use internet banking and we listen to music and watch videos online – at least this is what TalkTalk’s latest study found. The survey asked as many as 20,000 people about their web habits and found that roughly six out of ten problems can be solved with a little help from our virtual friend, also known as the Internet. In fact, the vast majority of home broadband users (86 per cent) said…

Internet videos gain momentum

It seems that the majority of the UK goes online to watch videos at least once a week, 86 per cent to be exact. According to Experian Hitwise, a web-analyst, the website that we are likely to visit to feed our video viewing need is YouTube (70 per cent), followed closely by the BBC iPlayer and ITV Player coming close in number three. Lest we forget, YouTube is one of Internet star websites, with only Google and Facebook beating it in terms of popularity. On average, a user is likely to visit…

Virgin Media reports a growing broadband subscriber base

Keen broadband news followers might remember that Virgin Media saw a slight decline in its subscriber base back in Q2 and the good news is that the cable giant is back in the growing game again. The firm’s subscriber base grew by 19,100, scoring the company a total of 4,333,600 broadband subscribers. However, Virgin National saw a bit of a decline this quarter as 5,200 customers went elsewhere for non-cable broadband services, leaving a still solid 260,700 subscriber base. The rest of Virgin Media’s customers are getting their internet services via the…

Orange sees a subtle drop in its home broadband subscriber base

It seems that Orange (also known as a part of Everything Everywhere, the other part is T-Mobile) has reported yet another decrease, albeit not as drastic, in its home broadband subscriber base. Orange has been keen on “turning its business around”, as the aforementioned decreases have been haunting the ISP for quite a few financial quarters now, and here’s a few examples: First quarter of 2011 – 726,000 (44,000 subscribers lost); Second quarter of 2011 – 716,000 (10,000 subscribers lost); Third quarter of 2011 – 713,000 (3,000 subscribers lost). While the home…
