Everything Everywhere 4G trial shows progress

Some of you might remember that Everything Everywhere (T-Mobile and Orange) has been very keen on 4G services, seeing as it reported on the progress of its fourth gen mobile broadband trial in a small Cumbrian community of Threlkeld. Only a fraction (50) of households and businesses took part in the LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology based trial which reported back reaching speeds of 20Mbps. It is worth saying that EE is yet to report whether or not that figure is a maximum speed or an average. The hardware premises used…

4G: History in the making?

4G networks could be coming to the UK soon if a campaign by mobile carrier Everything Everywhere is successful. The firm, which was formed from a merger of T-Mobile and Orange, is urging consumers to join the ‘4G Britain’ campaign to force the government to speed up the introduction of the super-fast service. With handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S3 now sporting quad core processors under the hood it seems fitting that network speeds are finally catching up on smartphone performance. Operators have been fighting over the distribution of…

Virgin Media keen on 4G trials

It seems that more firms are keen on deploying 4G services, as Virgin Media announced that it was going to commence a pilot scheme trialling LTE (Long Term Evolution) services. The cable giant commented that it was going to be a rather serious 4G test, seen as it will reach an array of major cities. Virgin Media is planning to use the 2.6GHz spectrum band, which Ofcom will soon auction (Q4) assuming there aren’t going to be any further delays. As a quick reminder, the firm has been testing LTE services previously,…

Insiders predict potential damage to LTE services due to lack of harmonisation

As the whole world is getting ready to use 4G mobile broadband (those who are not using it yet at least), industry insiders warn there might be potential flaws with the oh-so awaited service. As a quick reminder, the fourth generation would see users turn to LTE-based technology which would potentially bring speeds of 1Gbps to your smartphones or computers. However now it is thought that too many providers are going to base their products on incompatible bands which could corrupt the service. A fresh report coming from GSMA’s Wireless Intelligence has…

O2 to conduct grand 4G mobile broadband trial in London

O2 has reported it was more than ready to conduct the country’s biggest 4G-based LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile broadband trial. Feel free to get excited if you are a Londoner and an O2 customer, as you might be one of the lucky few to be able to take advantage of mobile broadband speeds reaching 50Mbps. It has been reported that the 9-month-long trial should cover roughly 15 square miles which includes Soho, Westminster, Canary Wharf, King’s Cross and South Bank. However, the first stage of the trial will only include 1,000…

BT and Everything Everywhere kick off 4G trial in South Newquay

Remember BT and EE (Everything Everywhere which consists of Orange as well as T-Mobile) announcing a joint venture to trial 4G LTE-based mobile broadband? Well, in a nutshell, it’s on. In more detail, LTE, which stands for Long Term Evolution, will be tested in St. Newlyn East (South Newquay in Cornwall) which is currently considered to be a notspot. It’s worth adding that only 200 customers will be the first ones to experience what it feels like to browse the web using 4G technology. Olaf Swantee, CEO of Everything Everywhere, was quite…

Rivals to try postponing 4G auction, Three suggests

Three (3) decided to put its fortune-teller hat on and predict that its rivals, for instance O2, Orange and T-Mobile’s parent, Everything Everywhere, as well as Vodafone will try to postpone Ofcom’s spectrum auction (to be used for 4G and LTE mobile broadband). In more detail, the aforementioned spectrum includes both 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. It is worth adding that O2 and Vodafone received the permission to give their 900MHz and 1800MHz bands a new purpose – from 2G to 3G, a move after which Three (3) has been raising the…

4G comes to Sweden

Swedish consumers have been introduced by telecommunications company Ericsson to the next generation of mobile broadband. Long Term Evolution technology (LTE-Advanced), a form of 4G, is going to provide users with speeds of up to 1Gbps. In comparison, mobile broadband services in the UK currently reach average speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. Ulf Ewaldsson, Ericsson’s Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio, said: “Ericsson encourages all regulators to allocate harmonised spectrum as early as possible. “The next step of LTE enhances the current service offering, performance and data speed even further. “It provides operators…

Guernsey and Jersey to have up to 50Mbps LTE trials

Good news for Guernsey and Jersey as Jersey Telecom (JT Group) has recently revealed its latest partnership with Alcatel–Lucent to test LTE (Long-Term-Evolution) mobile broadband technology on the two Channel Islands. The plan is a part of a wider strategy called Gigabit Isles which is to provide high speed broadband to the islanders who currently face slow internet connections. ISPreview has also reported that the radio spectrum to be used will be the 1800MHz band which will give way for speeds of up to 50Mbps. Mobile Europe quoted the chairman of Jersey…

Critical Momentum for LTE?

It has recently been estimated that roughly 16 million tech-savvy customers will switch to long-term evolution (LTE) broadband services by the end of this year. ABI Research has revealed that in fact LTE is starting to get “critical momentum” with about twelve countries already providing commercial LTE services. In addition, it has been said that it was not only economically strong countries such as Germany that were making LTE available to consumers, but also places where the economy is still at a developing stage, such as Uzbekistan. ABI Research also discovered that…
