Orange 3G services were down last Thursday due to “configuration change”

If your mobile operator is Orange you might have noticed your services going down recently, last Thursday to be exact. In fact, it was due to a certain “configuration change”, as the operator described it. Providing you did spot the outage, Broadbandwatcher would like to ensure you that you weren’t the only one, seen as it was somewhat of a national mobile broadband (3G) blackout for the company’s customers. Interestingly, T-Mobile subscribers, who share the network with Orange, did not report even a single hiccup with the portable internet on their smartphones. However,…

Orange and T-Mobile to get a single name?

You might recall that Everything Everywhere is actually a merger between Orange and T-Mobile, however according to a fresh report in The Times the firms might soon become one. Like that 90s Spice Girls song. The Times has reported that redeveloping the firms into a single brand entity was “under consideration”, but no name suggestions have been revealed except the fact the new title would compliment either T-Mobile, Orange or indeed both brands. Previously, it has been claimed that EE was keen on calling it quits for Orange but the fresh…

GiffGaff refuses to feed data-hungry abusers

If you are a heavy internet user, you might want to look the opposite direction when someone suggests you to use GiffGaff. According to recent reports, GiffGaff has conducted a study looking at user behaviour and internet traffic rates which led the mobile provider suggest that only one per cent of their users was devouring 33 per cent of their whole data capacity. Not good but good enough to disconnect that one per cent, thought GiffGaff despite the fact that it offered an “unlimited data” option, where FUP applied. The mobile provider…

Ofcom suggests expanding 4G to 98 per cent of the population

Rory Stewart is probably smiling right now, Broadbandwatcher sure is. Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulator, has today announced the launch of its second consultation into the upcoming auction of 4G mobile broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz bands). This time Ofcom will be discussing proposals to extend UK’s mobile broadband coverage from the current planned figure of 95 per cent to 98 per cent, a suggestion we have all previously heard before coming from Rory Stewart MP for Penrith. Ofcom CEO, Ed Richards, was reported as saying: “The proposals published today will influence the…

Three saw a 600 per cent mobile data consumption hike during NYE

According to Three (3), our mobile broadband data consumption has reached an all time high during New Year’s Eve just over a week ago when compared to last year. The figures were 80TB (TeraBytes) and 14TB respectively. According to the mobile provider’s calculator this signalled a whopping 600 per cent increase. And all it took was a single year. Nigel Field, Three’s (3) Director of Devices, was quoted as commenting: “From Twitpics of fireworks, to Facebook wall posts wishing people all the best, my nearest and dearest certainly took advantage of being…

Vodafone leaves its At Home broadband service behind

If you were using Vodafone’s fixed-line broadband, expect to be migrated to PlusNet, as the former decided to eliminate its home internet services for good. As many of you may recall, Vodafone erased the service from its website, despite speculations that the mobile operator was looking into revamping the product. Due to lack of publicity as well as fierce competitors setting new standards by the hour, the company decided to leave its home broadband service overboard. As a quick reminder, Vodafone was offering BT-based unlimited broadband with speeds of up to 8Mbps…

Ofcom: mobile operators “entangling” the 4G auction

The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) has heard Ofcom saying that mobile operators were “entangling” the now severely delayed spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz) auction to be used for 4G mobile broadband. It is no secret that all five (Three, O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange) operators were slowing down the process saying that competition will not be fair with some using legal threats. Ofcom has been pressured by the UK Government (not to mention consumers) to “get on with it” as soon as possible. According to the telecommunications regulator’s calculations, despite delaying…

Sky Broadband and Virgin Media manage to keep customers happiest, Ofcom finds

Customers were mostly pleased with the likes of Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media, Ofcom’s latest customer satisfaction study found. It might be worth noting that Virgin Media has seen a slight increase in dissatisfaction, 5 per cent to be exact, while Orange has been seen a boost from just 40 per cent two years ago to the current figure of 70 per cent. Orange of course was more than happy with the findings and issued a statement saying: “We’re really pleased with our ranking in this latest report, as we’ve been…

We serve a 40 per cent of UK’s mobile data traffic, says Three

According to Three (3), it was serving roughly 40 per cent of “all of the UK’s mobile data traffic combined”, despite the fact that it was considered to be smallest mobile operator from UK’s big five (others include: Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and Orange). According to the company, roughly 137Tb (terabytes) of files and data passed backwards and forwards via Three’s network, with Facebook being the biggest offender. If you are interested in numbers, try to chew through 1.24bn Facebook hits that Three sees on a monthly basis. A spokesperson for Three (3)…

Exceeding mobile broadband data caps – still gets consumers bill shocked

Your heart beats faster, your eyes widen and your jaw drops without you even knowing it – yes, you got a bill shock because you browsed the web on your smartie a tad too much this month. Ombudsman Services (previously known as OTELO), which is an alternative dispute resolution or less formally, a complaints handler, voiced its concern that mobile operators were simply not giving out enough information regarding the charges once customers exceeded their data limits. The complaints handler issued a statement explaining why it was worried about bill-shocked consumers: “This…
