2 months free broadband for newbie O2 customers

While existing O2 customers (who have been sticking to the operator for more than 2 years) can get their hands on 6 months free broadband if they sign up for a new package, newbies too will get treated to 2 months free internet services when they grab a new deal. It might be worth underlining that the offer applies only to the ISP’s popular The All Rounder and The Works packages. In addition, customers who decided to take the offers on a 12 month contract will get a free installation. O2 has…

Sky Broadband and Virgin Media manage to keep customers happiest, Ofcom finds

Customers were mostly pleased with the likes of Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media, Ofcom’s latest customer satisfaction study found. It might be worth noting that Virgin Media has seen a slight increase in dissatisfaction, 5 per cent to be exact, while Orange has been seen a boost from just 40 per cent two years ago to the current figure of 70 per cent. Orange of course was more than happy with the findings and issued a statement saying: “We’re really pleased with our ranking in this latest report, as we’ve been…

O2 to trial Voice and texts over Wi-Fi services

O2 UK has recently begun trialling its newest venture – VoIP (voice-over-IP) services. This will allow customers to use wireless broadband to make calls or write texts via their smarties (both based on Android and iOS). It has been argued that this is somewhat similar to what Three (3) has been doing when it incorporated Skype into its services. It has also been said that mobile operators have not been toying too much with VoIP services especially freeware such as Skype because they feared that these would slow down the amount…

O2 to rapidly build its own Wi-Fi network

We need to build ourselves a public Wi-Fi network and do so fast. We’ll get Ben Mein to deliver it too, thought O2. The plan is to make O2 Wifi free to use, and according to the mobile operator, Mr Mein has the relevant skills to oversee the project as Head of Commercial Delivery. O2 announced its intention to set up a Wi-Fi network back in January, which would be available for both customers and non-customers free of charge. Yes, even those using Orange or Vodafone will be able to get…

O2 to provide unlimited downloads – or is it?

Moments ago O2 UK has announced that it is to take away usage allowances in its higher end home broadband packages. Instead, the ISP will concentrate on providing “truly unlimited downloads”, oh but what’s that Broadbandwatcher hears? FUP will still apply – in other words, you can’t be too greedy and download “excessively”. It is probably worth mentioning that O2 did not specify what does “excessive” mean in its vocabulary, arguably the ASA would also like to know, not only the consumers. The aforementioned higher-end packages will be of course, The All…

4G auction could potentially be delayed

The UK Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt was forced to warn mobile phone operators “to put aside competitive differences and work together” after claims were made concerning the auction of 4G mobile broadband spectrum. His remarks came after Three (3) Mobile director, David Dyson, accused mobile providers such as, Everything Everywhere (T-Mobile and Orange), O2 and Vodafone of being happy to see the auction delayed. This may be because Ofcom enabled spectrum that was reserved for calls and texts to be used for…

Rivals to try postponing 4G auction, Three suggests

Three (3) decided to put its fortune-teller hat on and predict that its rivals, for instance O2, Orange and T-Mobile’s parent, Everything Everywhere, as well as Vodafone will try to postpone Ofcom’s spectrum auction (to be used for 4G and LTE mobile broadband). In more detail, the aforementioned spectrum includes both 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. It is worth adding that O2 and Vodafone received the permission to give their 900MHz and 1800MHz bands a new purpose – from 2G to 3G, a move after which Three (3) has been raising the…

Mobile operators to block stolen smarties

It seems that looters who thought they could get away with using a stolen smartie might be in for a surprise as mobile operators stated they would do everything possible to block those out of their networks. In recent days shops selling electronic devices such as laptops, computers, smartphones and tablets have been hit by looters and rioters. Nevertheless, mobile operators warned that anti-theft measures will be applied, making it impossible to sell or use the stolen handsets. A spokesperson for O2 was reported as saying: “As soon as we identify any stolen…
