4G from EE has been live for just over a month now and EE said this morning that its 4G customers are seeing speeds up to five times faster than 3G speeds.
Mark Overton, the firm’s vice president of wholesale, said:
“We’ve been live in market for just over a month now and are seeing reliable 6-8Mbps speeds, and I think anyone using 3G would agree that’s faster.
“And we are seeing significant customer uplift on speed on that data access.
“Sometimes we are seeing speeds of up to 30Mbps although that’s usually…

The good news is that we complain less about our telecommunication services, Ofcom found in its quarterly analysis of the UK’s customer complaints data.
According to the study, during Q2 of 2012 there was only an average of 0.42 complaints per 1000 customers about TalkTalk’s home broadband services (fixed-line to be exact) which is a great boost to the provider considering its rather dark mis-selling past.
However, the ISP still remains at the bottom of food chain while both Virgin Media and Sky Broadband receive pats on the back for being…

It seems that it’s not only Everything Everywhere that will launch 4G services in the UK – mobile operator, Three (3) might just join the fourth generation pack.
According to recent reports, the parent firm of Orange and T-Mobile agreed to sell off a chunk of its 4G approved spectrum to Three (3). This will potentially enable the mobile operator to offer much faster mobile broadband than the currently available 3G services.
Of course this is not a good deed moment from EE. The European Commisison has put forward a regulation…

Good news comes from the UK broadband sector as the country’s average speeds now reach 9Mbps, according to Ofcom’s latest study.
The current speeds are two and a half times faster than those which we had almost four years ago (3.6Mbps). See the timeline of speeds below:
Date Average actual UK fixed-line residential broadband speed
Nov 2008 3.6Mbit/s
May 2009 4.1Mbit/s
May 2010 5.2Mbit/s
Nov/Dec 2010 6.2Mbit/s
May 2011 6.8Mbit/s
Nov 2011 7.6Mbit/s
May 2012 9.0Mbit/s
(Figures: Ofcom)
One of the main reasons why the average figure increased was the quickly expanding trend of fibre optic broadband and enhancements ADSL…

TalkTalk received more customer complaints than any other broadband or landline provider in the final quarter of last year.
This announcement comes from Ofcom, whose latest data showed that TalkTalk is still the most complained about provider.
This is the fifth quarter that the company has been on top of this particular chart. Think of it as the Razzies of the broadband industry.
During the last quarter TalkTalk received 0.61 complaints for every 1000 customers for its broadband service, while its landline service heard 0.78 moans.
The ISP also saw an increase of…

According to Ofcom, national broadband speeds have risen by 22 per cent when compared to last year’s performance.
Previously average speeds reached 6.8Mbps and this has now grown to 7.6Mbps over the last 12 months.
Broadbandwatcher would like to remind you that other calculators have come up with different averages over the years, some showing that UK speeds were higher (or indeed lower) than these published by Ofcom yesterday.
In other perhaps more obvious news, it has been established that the huge gap between advertised speeds and real-life ones is still “significant”,…

London has some of the slowest mobile broadband speeds in the UK, according to a new report by uSwitch.
The report looked at mobile broadband speeds from 30 cities around the UK and London came in at 23rd. The city with the fastest mobile broadband was Portsmouth with average speeds of 3.46Mbps compared to London’s 2.71Mbps.
This new finding has caused some concern about how London’s 3G network will cope with the surge of users during the Olympics later this year.
Experts at uSwitch have said that it is crucial for the…

Rory Stewart is probably smiling right now, Broadbandwatcher sure is.
Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulator, has today announced the launch of its second consultation into the upcoming auction of 4G mobile broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz bands).
This time Ofcom will be discussing proposals to extend UK’s mobile broadband coverage from the current planned figure of 95 per cent to 98 per cent, a suggestion we have all previously heard before coming from Rory Stewart MP for Penrith.
Ofcom CEO, Ed Richards, was reported as saying:
“The proposals published today will influence the…

If you are wondering what speeds you will be getting when using Three’s (3) mobile broadband services – the answer is (surprise, surprise) it depends.
In more detail, according to the mobile operator, the majority should be getting anything from 1-4Mbps from their 3G service, and the better the handset as well as the more urban is the location, the faster the connection.
These mobile broadband speeds are achieved through the 21Mbps capable HSPA offering, and it’s plain to see that the reality is quite far from the theoretical maximum speeds,…

Telecoms watchdog, Ofcom, has today revealed the findings of its yearly Communications Market Report (ICMR) which summarised the broadband, phone and TV situation across 17 countries.
According to the report, fibre optic broadband availability isn’t bad in the UK at all, in fact it is more or less the same like in other European countries – however the take up rate is lacking.
Let’s talk numbers – according to Ofcom, roughly 59 per cent of UK homes had access to fibre optic broadband, either FTTC or FTTP – be it via…
