4G auction reserve revealed

Ofcom has set a reserve price of £1.3bn for the auction of 4G mobile spectrum. The telecoms watchdog has released a timeline of events leading up to the highly anticipated launches of the 4G services in May and June next year. Bidding will take place in January, with licences being granted in February and March. The bidding will be held over secure internet connections and Ofcom claim that this stage could take “a number of weeks”. Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards was quoted as saying: “The entire industry is now focused on the…

Three to offer 4G?

It seems that it’s not only Everything Everywhere that will launch 4G services in the UK – mobile operator, Three (3) might just join the fourth generation pack. According to recent reports, the parent firm of Orange and T-Mobile agreed to sell off a chunk of its 4G approved spectrum to Three (3). This will potentially enable the mobile operator to offer much faster mobile broadband than the currently available 3G services. Of course this is not a good deed moment from EE. The European Commisison has put forward a regulation…

Everything Everywhere 4G trial shows progress

Some of you might remember that Everything Everywhere (T-Mobile and Orange) has been very keen on 4G services, seeing as it reported on the progress of its fourth gen mobile broadband trial in a small Cumbrian community of Threlkeld. Only a fraction (50) of households and businesses took part in the LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology based trial which reported back reaching speeds of 20Mbps. It is worth saying that EE is yet to report whether or not that figure is a maximum speed or an average. The hardware premises used…

4G: History in the making?

4G networks could be coming to the UK soon if a campaign by mobile carrier Everything Everywhere is successful. The firm, which was formed from a merger of T-Mobile and Orange, is urging consumers to join the ‘4G Britain’ campaign to force the government to speed up the introduction of the super-fast service. With handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S3 now sporting quad core processors under the hood it seems fitting that network speeds are finally catching up on smartphone performance. Operators have been fighting over the distribution of…

Everything Everywhere launches Smart Signal Sharing

Good news comes from Everything Everywhere as the joint venture between T-Mobile and Orange confimed the launch of its Smart Signal Sharing technology. This means that if T-Mobile’s mobile broadband signal weakens, users will be automatically transferred to Orange’s 3G connection. This is the final stage of EE’s planned merger which saw both T-Mobile’s and Orange’s services fully integrated as a part of a grand £1.5bn investment. A large chunk of that money will go to preparing the networks for future 4G deployment. CEO of Everything Everywhere, Olaf Swantee, recently said in a…

Everything Everywhere: consumers want 4G and they want it now

According to recent reports, T-Mobile and Orange (Everything Everywhere or EE) with a little help from YouGov surveyed 2,033 Brits to find out that the vast majority (74 per cent) could not wait for 4G mobile broadband services to be rolled out. The giant is very interested in Ofcom giving it the green light to utilise the 1800MHz band by Q4 of this year in order to provide 4G services and the results of this study seem to feed the cause. Commenting on the news, CEO or EE, Olaf Swantee, stated…

The EC to investigate the Mobile Commerce Joint Venture plans

You might have noticed that plans to form something potentially anti-competitive have been in the cards for some time now. Broadbandwatcher is of course referring to the Mobile Commerce Joint Venture between O2, Vodafone and Everything Everywhere, with Three (3) nowhere near the radar. As a quick reminder, Three (3) is the smallest mobile operator of the bunch, and a very outspoken one too. It criticised Ofcom’s upcoming auction on numerous occasions. The EC (European Commission), has noticed that the joint venture can potentially pose as a threat…

Orange and T-Mobile to get a single name?

You might recall that Everything Everywhere is actually a merger between Orange and T-Mobile, however according to a fresh report in The Times the firms might soon become one. Like that 90s Spice Girls song. The Times has reported that redeveloping the firms into a single brand entity was “under consideration”, but no name suggestions have been revealed except the fact the new title would compliment either T-Mobile, Orange or indeed both brands. Previously, it has been claimed that EE was keen on calling it quits for Orange but the fresh…

Everything Everywhere invests £1.5bn to perfect its mobile broadband services

Everything Everywhere seems to be awfully keen on upgrading its existing mobile broadband network and get ready for the arrival of 4G (fourth-generation) services. The company, which is a joint partnership between T-Mobile and Orange, confirmed that it has invested as much as £1.5bn to perfect its network and provide faster speeds. Ofcom has severely delayed its 4G spectrum auction, however it still expects that the next generation mobile broadband services to see the light of day at some point in Q4 of 2013. In addition, as a quick reminder, Everything Everywhere…

T-Mobile and Orange kick start their big 3G switch-on

Broadbandwatcher will not surprised if T-Mobile and Orange start singing “We Are Family”, as the two get even closer with the completion of its “big 3G switch-on“. In more detail, according to the plan, the two which recently merged into Everything Everywhere (EE) will allow each other’s customers to access both 3G mobile broadband networks. This carries a significant benefit for both providers’ customers as they will have a wider coverage (aka access 3G services in more locations) at no extra cost whatsoever. Everything Everywhere’s CEO, Olaf Swantee, was reported as saying…
