EE and Vodafone join Virgin Media’s underground Wi-Fi

Most people have become used to being able to access email and websites whilst waiting for the train. Virgin Media have signed up EE and Vodafone as wholesale partners for its Wi-Fi service on London’s underground, so EE, Vodafone and Virgin Media customers will continue to be able to stay connected underground for free. Virgin Media offered free Wi-Fi access to its public Wi-Fi network in the London underground. Originally this was just going to be free during the 2012 Olympic Games, but in October, Virgin Media announced that it was…

Vodafone: our 4G coverage is worth waiting for

You may come sooner, 4GEE, but our user experience will be better, said Vodafone. As a quick reminder, EE’s fourth generation services are to be officially launched as soon as tomorrow, the 30th of October. As a part of the plan, you might have noticed a number of retail outlets (i.e. T-Mobile or Orange shops) already being rebranded to EE. Meanwhile, Vodafone commented that because it is going to make use of the 800MHz band (EE intends to use the 1800MHz frequency), it is highly likely that the former’s in-door service…

Cheaper roaming from Vodafone

You might recall Broadbandwatcher reporting on the fact that both Three and O2 hopped on the cheaper roaming bandwagon, after it has been claimed that the prices travellers were paying for staying connected via their mobiles were far too high. Today Vodafone also joined the aforementioned operators and started offering a cheaper roaming option in the form of an add-on for its Pay Monthly customers (very much like Three). The ability to talk and browse more when trekking through Europe will cost…

Vodafone buys CWW for more than a billion

You might remember that last February Broadbandwatcher reported on the fact that Vodafone had its eyes on Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW), intending to purchase it. According to recent news, Vodafone reached a “reasonable” deal and got the green light to acquire the firm. This deal included a £1.044bn payout, which is much more than it was initially estimated (£700m). By buying CWW, Vodafone will gain access to the provider’s LLU system as well as help Vodafone cope with the growing consumer demand for more generous mobile…

Vodafone’s femtocell trial to kick off in Hamnavoe and Walls

You might remember that Broadbandwatcher has been reporting on trailing femtocell technology to deliver faster and more reliable mobile broadband and phone services. It has now been announced that Vodafone UK has chosen Hamnavoe and Walls (two remote communities in the Shetland Islands) to be the first locations to have the Open Femto trial. All in all, Vodafone plans to run the scheme across 12 rural communities. The strategy is to place Femtocell equipment on top of telegraph poles and connect these to fixed line broadband services….

The EC to investigate the Mobile Commerce Joint Venture plans

You might have noticed that plans to form something potentially anti-competitive have been in the cards for some time now. Broadbandwatcher is of course referring to the Mobile Commerce Joint Venture between O2, Vodafone and Everything Everywhere, with Three (3) nowhere near the radar. As a quick reminder, Three (3) is the smallest mobile operator of the bunch, and a very outspoken one too. It criticised Ofcom’s upcoming auction on numerous occasions. The EC (European Commission), has noticed that the joint venture can potentially pose as a threat…

To buy or not to buy: Vodafone considers purchasing C&W

Some have hinted that Vodafone is thinking whether or not it should add Cable & Wireless Worldwide (C&W) into its shopping basket as the demand for mobile broadband is growing day by day. This would make perfect sense as earlier, the telecoms giant reported that data was one of the main contributors to its revenues during the previous quarter. However Vodafone stated that the firm’s brainstorm was still in very “early stages”. Nevertheless, the estimate for buying out C&W was revealed as £700m. If Vodafone was to go ahead with the purchase,…

Vodafone leaves its At Home broadband service behind

If you were using Vodafone’s fixed-line broadband, expect to be migrated to PlusNet, as the former decided to eliminate its home internet services for good. As many of you may recall, Vodafone erased the service from its website, despite speculations that the mobile operator was looking into revamping the product. Due to lack of publicity as well as fierce competitors setting new standards by the hour, the company decided to leave its home broadband service overboard. As a quick reminder, Vodafone was offering BT-based unlimited broadband with speeds of up to 8Mbps…

Vodafone’s adult filtering blocks legitimate underwear e-shops

Ever tried to browse through a lingerie shop on your way to work? Probably not, if you are on Vodafone and forgot to opt out of adult content filtering. It has emerged that Vodafone was automatically blocking legitimate underwear e-shops such as Figleaves or La Senza as a part of its adult content filtering strategy. The issue was discovered by digital rights and policy activist, James Firth, who simply could not access the websites through his Vodafone-connected iPhone. It might be worth adding that customers could easily opt out from content blocking,…

Vodafone to trial femtocell technology to boost 3G services in rural areas

Vodafone is ready and set to trial its fresh and new femtocell based technology, and now is asking 12 rural communities to be the first ones to have a taste improved 3G services. For those wondering what these femtos and cells are, it is indeed a technology which uses a fixed line broadband connection and repurposes its signals for 3G. Some of you might be familiar with Femtocell, as it was mainly used within premises, for example mobile phone signal boosters such as Sure Signal. This will be a continuation of a…
