Devon villagers fear losing their broadband

The residents in the West Devon village of Northlew are concerned they will lose their community broadband service if a wind turbine is built nearby. The 80m (262ft) turbine could disrupt their Wi-Fi network for their village of 500 people. The environmental energy scheme company Energy 4 All proposed to work with the villagers to maintain the service if the turbine is going to be built. Spokesman John Malone said: “We need to be absolutely sure there are no negative impacts, so we’re looking at that now. “The advice we’re getting is there is…

Broadband boost for Norfolk and Suffolk

A new service was today launched to boost broadband service in notspots across Norfolk and parts of Suffolk. ITSwisp was designed by InTouch Systems, a Norwich IT provider. This Wi-Fi technology means that homes and businesses that use it do not need a phone line because the whole system is based on radio wave transmission. This works when signals are transmitted from masts across the area to small aerials on the houses. A back-up system is in place so if one of the masts does not work, another will transmit the signal. Wireless…

Public funds to give Mansfield free Wi-Fi

Mansfield in Nottingham could soon become the first town in the UK to enjoy free wireless internet (Wi-Fi) thanks to crowdfunding. Funded entirely by members of the public and local businesses, Mansfield’s Business Improvement District (BID) and the Mansfield District Council (MDC) hope to install free Wi-Fi transmitters on lampposts across the town. This would provide free coverage to anyone in the area. “Thou shalt not steal” among popular Wi-Fi names

Wireless internet networks are becoming more colourful and inventive by name according to the database company OpenSignalMaps. While it is still more common to have something like “The Jones Family” some residents prefer to be more creative with theirs, using them like a text message to show their irritation. Searching for an available network, a local will now find a range of choices for them to observe, from “Stop Stealing My Newspaper” or “Your Music Is Terrible” to “Shut The Barking Dog Up No 7”. For those broadband sneak thieves, some network…

Allpay almost ready for lift off in Peterchurch and Garway

You might remember Broadbanwatcher reporting on the good deeds that Allpay Broadband was trying to achieve. You also might have noticed that things have gone quiet ever since. The good thing is that Allpay admitted that it took some time for the provider to get where it is now. No matter, Broadbanwatcher says, as long as the ISP is closer to the finish line. In more detail, Allpay, which specialises in fixed Wi-Fi, announced that their broadband services are to go live any day now in Peterchurch, Garway as well as…

Sky rolls out “state-of-the-art” Wi-Fi routers

Good news comes to all who are tired of Wi-Fi routers which are swallowing up broadband speeds. This is because the device acts as a middle man of the sorts. It is wired to the broadband connection and sends out signals which your laptop then catches – at a cost. Thick walls, electrical equipment, doors – all slow down broadband speeds. However now Sky thinks that it has found a solution, well actually made one. How about a wireless router which is “designed and built by Sky’s in-house engineering team”…

4G lands in Reading, Swindon and Southwark

It’s official, everyone. 4G has now landed in Reading, Swindon and Southwark. A word of caution though, to access the network, users are required to have special 4G-capable devices, such as dongles or smartphones which should be able to catch and read the signals. Users can’t use 4G without these. According to UK Broadband’s CEO, Nicholas James, 4G was just like the doctor ordered for businesses and generally for the economy: “Being always connected is now an essential requirement in today’s business and increasingly cloud-based world. It can be extremely damaging if…
